Ready Mix Concrete San Francisco | Concrete Patio & Hardscape ...

Last updated 16 hours ago

?

Concrete is one of the most versatile and durable home building materials available today. There are many different ways you can enhance the look of your San Francisco home?s interior or exterior using ready-mix concrete. Here are a few suggestions on home improvement projects that incorporate concrete:

Concrete Patios

If you?re looking to add some outdoor living space to your home, consider a concrete patio for your backyard. Patios are a low-maintenance, durable alternative to wooden or vinyl decks; they are also much more cost-effective. For a totally custom, upscale look, use concrete stains, colored concrete, or pre-cast pavers to accent the perimeter of your patio.

Foundation Footings

If you decide to go for a deck, use poured concrete to build the foundation footing for wooden beams. Concrete footings are super durable and easy to make and can be buried underground to give your deck a flawless, totally natural look.

Concrete Countertops

Concrete countertops are back in fashion, which is great for homeowners looking for an affordable DIY alternative to other solid countertops, like granite or Corian. With a little bit of planning and careful template design, your concrete countertop can have a great professional look. Ready-mix concrete delivery will make constructing your concrete countertop even simpler.

Concrete Floors

Concrete floors are a beautiful alternative to traditional home flooring materials, like carpet or wood flooring. Concrete floors are easy to clean, age beautifully, and will help to keep your home dust and dirt free. Plus, concrete floors are much more durable than other types of flooring, so they?ll last much longer.

Bring Home the Right Front Door from Doors Houston Store

Bring Home the Right Front Door from Doors Houston Store

February 27th, 2012 by admin

Home Improvement,Home

Choosing the front door for your home requires creative planning. This is because this structure serves a major role of introducing your home?s personality and character into the world. Anyone dropping by to visit your place will always have their eyes affixed to your front door as they wait for your invitation to come inside. The appearance of your front houston doors essentially gives clues as to what is to be expected on the home within.

Doors can be purchased from many doors Houston dealers and home improvement stores out there. When you get to these places, you?ll find that the choices of doors before you can be rather overwhelming. There are many choices when it comes to size, materials and styles. Being well-informed about these selections is very important so that you can easily bring home the right front door from the doors Houston store you visit.

Size is an important matter when you are buying your front Conroe windows and doors. Avoid getting too narrow designs because they can affect your ability to come inside especially when you are bringing bulky materials with you. A small and narrow front door also negatively impacts the appearance of your home?s fa?ade. Whenever possible choose a double door system. If not a single door that is of standard 34-36? width must be used.

When it comes to materials, there are basically five choices for you to choose from. Front doors can be made from solid wood, decorative glass, iron, wood and wrought iron and solid steel. If you wish for a traditional look, solid wood entry doors will be your best option. For stylish front doors, you should pick those manufactured with decorative glass and wood and wrought iron materials. If you wish a nice and sturdy set of doors, select ones that are crafted using heavy-duty iron. But, if you seek longer-lasting doors with the best security and insulation properties, then you should ultimately go for the solid steel doors.

Paying attention to the style of the front door is absolutely important. Consider all the types of entry doors Houston designs that you will see so that you will know which style is best suited to the architectural style of your home. You can opt to have French doors, sliding doors, doors with sidelites, Craftsman doors or Tiffany doors and Storm door houston. When you opt for decorative glass doors, you can choose to have the full oval or ? oval glass panels, or perhaps, pick the 6-lite or 9-lite systems in square or rectangle shapes. You may also choose front doors with straight or arched tops to them. Whatever you pick, just make sure it matches well the style of your home?s fa?ade.?

Why the Greek Bond Swap is Just Great for London

Agreed, we?re all just waiting now to see how the Greek bailout is going to fail and when. The whether is, for most of at least, already assumed.

But there?s an interesting little coda to the whole story. The vast majority of the bonds in issue were issued under Greek law. Last week the Parliament changed the law about those bonds. The Collective Action Clauses (ie, what percentage of the bonds do we have to get to agree to something to make it a voluntary agreement) were changed. Yes, governments can do this: when they find that their own laws preclude them from doing something they?d like to do then they can and indeed sometimes do go and change those pesky laws.

Of course, the more often a government does this the less people trust the rule of law and the certainty of contract in that country. Which is what is happening with the new bonds that are being issued as part of this bailout. In brief, here:

The bond swap will be run from London by Deutsche Bank and HSBC.

In fact, it?s not so much that it?s being run from London, it?s that in a legal sense it is actually happening in London. Here?s the actual agreement, courtesy of the FT. Clause 25 on page 31. The new bonds are being issued under English law. That means that any court cases will be in English courts. Under English law and the only people who can change that will be the British Parliament.

It really does say something about a country when it?s not just the finances of the place that people don?t trust any more but the very basics of the legal system and contracts, no?

I would in fact go further. There are any number of continentals, large numbers of politicians among them, who are mystified as to why the City of London is one of the great international financial centres of the world. In fact, in international (as opposed to domestic like New York) finance it is the centre in the world. Why is it that this group of a few hundred thousand people is able to suck most of the wholesale financial markets out of the other countries of Europe?

To which at least part of the answer is that it provides, as the above Greek bond swap shows, something that financial markets value highly. That combination of rule of law and certainty of contract.

Which should be a warning to politicians of every stripe and country. You mess with those important things at your peril. Doesn?t matter how well it plays in domestic politics if you violate them, doesn?t really matter how good the short term results. Once you?ve lost your reputation for offering those valued things those who value them will simply leave and do business elsewhere, where they can enjoy those things they value.

Santorum a man of prayer, principle

After reading Mona Charen?s column in Saturday?s edition of the R&L, I can?t help but think that her type of attitude is what is wrong with this country.

She tells us that Rick Santorum is not fit to be our Republican nominee because he mentioned Satan in a speech he gave in 2008 to a religious institution. Rick Santorum is a man of principle and belief. He actually believes the Bible, and to Mona Charen that might be deplorable for a presidential candidate, but to me and many Americans, that is a breath of fresh air. The concept of good and evil is not a new thing, nor is it exclusive to Christianity. Almost all cultures have a belief in that which personifies good, and that which personifies evil. Rick Santorum has the guts to express it and that bothers her.

George Washington once said, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible." He also wrote in his personal prayer book, "I beseech Thee to defend me this night from all evil ?"

I?m just glad that Mona Charen wasn?t around when we were looking for our first president, otherwise we may have never been given the greatest example of what a leader should be, a God fearing man of prayer and principle.

Rick Santorum is such a man, and will have my support in the primaries.

The best laid plans of mice and men?..and a ? ? Family ...

So I have this little (over 6? long) oak entertainment center I?m working on. In my my design, I thought it would be cool to use European hidden hinges (Blum) on it. There are 4 doors. Two doors near the outside edges with solid oak raised panels and the inner two doors are divided glass behind which will reside the equipment. The two outer doors will hide 3 drawers each and they use full extension ball bearing drawer slides. The two inner doors hide 2 each sliding shelves on the same full extension drawer slides.

The doors are done EXCEPT drilling for the European hidden hinges. When I bought the hinges, I bought a Teflon setup block for setting up the drill press and the jig for drilling the holes in the face frame. These are 120? Blum face frame clip hidden hinges. I fit and installed drawers in one outer section and decided to dry fit the European hinges. Thanks to good Karma, luck or whatever you want to call it?.The hinges won?t allow the drawers to come out! The doors fold back in on the hinge when opened. Thus the drawer slide strikes the door. Well Vern..it?s not going to work with those hinges. I researched it at the site where I bought it and it didn?t point that minor thing out. I researched the same Blum hinge at another site and it showed that it folds back into itself and the slides won?t clear.

I had taken a scrap piece of oak lying in my cutoff box, drilled it, mounted the hinge then held it place on the face frame to discover this phenomena. So?.I didn?t drill the doors or the face frame?.. If I had drilled the doors with that 35mm hole, I?d be crying right now.

Dry fitting should be a regular part of building and assembling if you are a rank amateur like me.

Bo's Bowl: Mediterranean Pasta with Chicken and Asparagus

Let's talk f?ood photography for a minute...It's the reason I enjoy blogging and the reason I hate it!? Yes...I have a love/hate relationship with blogging.? But...Of course I wouldn't keep doing it if I didn't enjoy it...and the most stressful part and my favorite part...taking pictures of food.? I learned quickly that every light in the kitchen and dining room produced the most terrible brown icky looking food pictures.? I think every food blogger has experienced this...right?? And it really sucks cooking dinner at 3 o'clock in the afternoon so you can?have beautiful natural light photos.? Natural light is the way to go...it's just not always possible!

Now let me step out there and say PICTURES DO NOT MAKE THE BLOG...the person writing it does.? And I am not saying my pictures are all that great...I'm no professional, but a lot of people have asked me about taking better?food photos lately...and I've been telling them use natural light...and it is the best tip ever...just not possible most of the time.? Good lighting makes good pictures...not an expensive camera!

Most of my cooking happens in the evening, after I get home from work (so much for natural light)...So not long after?I began?blogging, I invested in a set of $$photo lights (soft boxes).? I guess the results were decent, and they served their purpose.? But it was awkward falling over lights in the kitchen...and when friends come over for dinner...saying ignore that big photo light in the corner of the dining room.? It was just too much work...made blogging not so much fun.? So I simplified things...started only using a combination of natural light/ plain old kitchen lights, a diffuser, and a mirror for reflecting light...much easier...less stressful, but very limiting!?

So I ordered a pair of Lowel Ego lights...they are very small (about the size of a shoe box)...and affordable (about $100 each).? This was my first experiment using them...well I actually only used one of them...attached it to my tripod so I could swivel?it around where I needed the light...and the I thought the results were good...I will not win any awards for these photos, but good enough...very good for just a $100 investment!? So if you're a fellow nighttime food blogger?struggling with your photos...these are worth looking into. (I've only had them for 3 days, so I can't speak for how long the bulbs last or anything like that.)

OK...I've chit-chatted long enough...you have?probably even forgot what's cooking...Mediterranean Pasta with Chicken and Asparagus...a recipe I stole from Lyndsey(The Tiny Skillet).? She posted this recipe earlier this week and it just sounded too good not to try.? I did tweak it a little...that's just my style.

And a pasta dish with the flavors of the Mediterranean...that's my style too.? And don't you just love those little baby bottles of wine?? They are perfect for cooking with...especially if you don't drink wine.? Oh, but I do drink wine...I just think the bottles are cute...That's why I buy them!? but...

?It's an easy/great tasting pasta dish...that comes together in about 30 minutes.? Just add a salad and some bread for one fine dinner.

?Mediterranean Pasta with Chicken and Asparagus

2- 9 oz packages fresh angel hair pasta (1lb dry would be fine)

4- boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces

1- bunch asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces

1- shallot, finely chopped

4- garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 tsp dried oregano

1/4 cup chopped oil packed sun dried tomatoes

1/4 cup sliced Kalamata olives

1/2 cup white wine

1/2 cup cream

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

a handful of fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips

4 oz crumbled Feta cheese

olive oil

salt and black pepper, to taste

Season the chicken with salt and pepper.? In a large skillet?over medium heat, heat enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan.? Add the chicken and saute until browned.? Add the asparagus, shallot, garlic, and oregano.? Saute for a couple minutes, until the shallot is translucent.? Add the sun dried tomatoes and olives, then the wine.? Allow the wine to simmer for a minute or two.? Then add the cream.? Allow the sauce to cook for a minute or two; season with salt and pepper.? Meanwhile cook the pasta in a pot of boiling salted water, until al dente.? Drain the pasta reserving a cup of the pasta water.? Add the pasta to the sauce, along with the Parmesan and basil.? Toss together?until the pasta is coated, adding as much of the reserved pasta water needed to create the consistency you desire.? Top with the crumbled Feta just before serving.

Serves about 6

Newark mayor: NYPD Muslim files 'deeply offensive'

(AP) ? The mayor and police director of New Jersey's largest city said Wednesday the New York Police Department misled their city and never told them it was conducting a widespread spying operation on Newark's Muslim neighborhoods. Had they known, they said, they never would have allowed it.

"If anyone in my police department had known this was a blanket investigation of individuals based on nothing but their religion, that strikes at the core of our beliefs and my beliefs very personally, and it would have merited a far sterner response," Newark Mayor Cory Booker said.

In mid-2007, the NYPD's secretive Demographics Unit fanned out across Newark, photographing every mosque and eavesdropping in Muslim businesses. The findings were cataloged in a 60-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, that served as a police guidebook to Newark's Muslims. There was no mention of terrorism or any criminal wrongdoing.

Officials reacted strongly on Wednesday.

"It is deeply offensive to me to do blanket surveillance for no reason other than religious affiliation," said Booker, who called on his state's attorney general to investigate.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, who was deputy chief of the department at the time, said the NYPD asked to be shown around the city. New York police said it was part of an investigation but never revealed what it was about, DeMaio said.

"We really want to be clear: This type of activity is not what the Newark PD would ever do," he said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was the top federal prosecutor in the state in 2007, said he didn't remember the NYPD ever approaching him about surveillance in the city or a threat that would justify it. He called the Newark report "disturbing" and said Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa was looking into the report.

"The NYPD has at times developed a reputation of asking forgiveness rather than permission," he said.

Such surveillance has become common in New York City in the decade since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Nearly 3,000 Americans died when al-Qaida terrorists hijacked airliners and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon near Washington and a field where one crashed in Pennsylvania.

Police have built databases showing where Muslims live, where they buy groceries, what Internet cafes they use and where they watch sports. Dozens of mosques and student groups have been infiltrated, and police have built detailed profiles of local ethnic groups, from Moroccans to Egyptians to Albanians.

But the NYPD's intelligence unit also operates far outside its jurisdiction and has worked to keep tabs on Muslims across the Northeast. The department has cataloged Muslim communities in Long Island, conducted undercover operations in New Brunswick, N.J., and has turned often innocuous Internet postings by Muslim student groups into police files.

The monitoring of Muslim college students across the Northeast drew sharp rebukes from administrators at Yale, Columbia and elsewhere earlier this week. But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued his most vigorous defense of his police department to date.

"The police department goes where there are allegations. And they look to see whether those allegations are true," he told reporters Tuesday. "That's what you'd expect them to do. That's what you'd want them to do. Remind yourself when you turn out the light tonight."

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne did not respond to a message seeking comment on the Newark effort Wednesday. He has previously denied the existence of the Demographics Unit.

The documents obtained by the AP show, for the first time in any detail, how the NYPD's intelligence-gathering efforts stretched outside the department's jurisdiction. New Jersey and Long Island residents had no reason to suspect the NYPD was watching them. And the department is not accountable to their votes or tax dollars.

NYPD conducted similar operations in Suffolk and Nassau counties on suburban Long Island, according to police records. The NYPD frequently operates outside its jurisdiction without telling federal or local officials.

The report left Newark Muslims grasping for explanations as they saw pictures of their mosques and businesses in police files.

"All of these are innocent people," Nagiba el-Sioufi of Newark said recently while her husband, Mohammed, flipped through the NYPD report.

Egyptian immigrants and American citizens, the couple raised two daughters in the United States. Mohammed works as an accountant and is vice president of the Islamic Culture Center, a mosque a few blocks from Newark City Hall.

"If you have an accusation on us, then spend the money on doing this to us," Nagiba said. "But you have no accusation."

The Newark police director at the time, Garry McCarthy, is now in charge of the Chicago Police Department. He said the NYPD initiated the operation and none of his officers participated.

Newark authorities who investigated how the NYPD operation was carried out concluded McCarthy received the 60-page report from the NYPD, according to a Newark official. The official, who insisted on anonymity because the inquiry was ongoing, said there was no evidence that McCarthy circulated the report to anyone else.

The goal of the report, like others the Demographics Unit compiled, was to give police at-their-fingertips access to information about Muslim neighborhoods. If police got a tip about an Egyptian terrorist in the area, for instance, they wanted to immediately know where he was likely to find a cheap room to rent, where he might buy his lunch and at what mosque he might attend Friday prayers.

"These locations provide the maximum ability to assess the general opinions and general activity of these communities," the NYPD Newark report said.

The effect of the program was that hundreds of American citizens were cataloged ? sometimes by name, sometimes simply by their businesses and their ethnicity ? in secret police files that spanned hundreds of pages:

? "A Black Muslim male named Mussa was working in the rear of store," an NYPD detective wrote after a clandestine visit to a dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., on Long Island.

? "The manager of this restaurant is an Indian Muslim male named Vicky Amin" was the report back from an Indian restaurant in Lindenhurst, N.Y., also on Long Island.

? "Owned and operated by an African Muslim (possibly Sudanese) male named Abdullah Ddita," was the summary from another dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., just off the highway on the way to the Hamptons, the wealthy Long Island getaway.

In one report, an officer describes how he put people at ease by speaking in Punjabi and Urdu, languages commonly spoken in Pakistan.

There are no allegations of terrorism in the Demographics Unit reports, and the documents make clear that police were interested only in locations frequented by Muslims. The canvass of businesses in Newark mentions Islam and Muslims 27 times. In one section of the report, police wrote that the largest immigrant groups in Newark were from Portugal and Brazil. But they did not photograph businesses or churches for those groups.

"No Muslim component within these communities was identified," police wrote, except for one business owned by a Brazilian Muslim of Palestinian descent.

Polls show that most New Yorkers strongly support the NYPD's counterterrorism efforts and don't believe police unfairly target Muslims. Civil rights groups and Muslim activists, however, have called for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's resignation over the spying and the department's screening of a video that portrays Muslims as wanting to dominate the United States.

In Newark, the report was met with a mixture of confusion and anger.

"Come, look at yourself on film," Abdul Kareem Abdullah called to his wife as he flipped through the NYPD files at the lunch counter of their restaurant, Hamidah's Cafe.

An American-born citizen who converted to Islam decades ago, Abdullah said he understands why, after the 9/11 terror attacks, people are afraid of Muslims. But he said he wishes the police would stop by, say hello, meet him and his customers and get to know them. The documents show police have no interest in that, he said.

"They just want to keep tabs on us," he said. "If they really wanted to understand, they'd come talk to us."

Newark Mayor Booker met with Islamic leaders while campaigning for his post. Those interviewed by the AP said they wanted to believe he didn't authorize the spying but wanted to hear from him directly.

"I have to look in his eyes," Mohammed el-Sioufi said at his mosque. "I know him. I met him. He was here."

Because officers conducted the operation covertly, the reports contain mistakes that could have been corrected had the officers talked to store owners or imams. If police ever had to rely on the database during an unfolding terrorism emergency as they had planned, those errors would have hindered their efforts.

For instance, locals said several businesses identified as belonging to African-American Muslims actually were owned by Afghans or Pakistanis. El-Sioufi's mosque is listed as an African-American mosque, but he said the imam is from Egypt and the congregation is a roughly even mix of black converts and people of foreign ancestries.

"We're not trying to hide anything. We are out in the open," said Abdul A. Muhammad, the imam of the Masjid Ali Muslim mosque in Newark. "You want to come in? We have an open door policy."

By choosing instead to conduct such widespread surveillance, Mohammed el-Sioufi said, police send the message that the whole community is suspect.

"When you spy on someone, you are kind of accusing them. You are not accepting them for choosing Islam," Nagiba el-Sioufi said. "This doesn't say, 'This guy did something wrong.' This says, 'Everyone here is a Muslim.'"

"It makes you feel uncomfortable, like this is not your country," she added. "This is our country."

Four children killed in NY house fire

Kris J. Murante / AP

Rochester firefighters work at the scene of a fatal fire at a home early Saturday.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. ? Four children died and four others were hospitalized Saturday after a fire raged through a two-story house on the city's west side.

Firefighters responding to an early-morning?call of a rubbish fire found what appeared to be some clothing burning in front of the wood-framed house, which contains side-by-side apartments, Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield told reporters.

They put out that blaze, knocked on the door, walked around the house and saw another fire inside ?that appeared to have occurred while we were here,? Caufield said.

Crews pulled a woman and infant from a first-floor apartment before the blaze quickly spread to the second floor, Caufield said.

Four children who appeared to be in their early teens or younger were later found dead on the second floor, WHEC-TV reported.

Four other people were taken by ambulance to a hospital, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

"The firefighters were actually enveloped in flames for a brief time," Caufield told the Democrat and Chronicle. "We withdrew them. There was just no possible way for them to make a search or any further entry in there without really sacrificing their own lives."

Things You Need To Consider When Choosing A Gym | New Health ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

The gym is a modern day shrine for health enthusiasts who are worried about their bodies and their lifestyle. In the last decade, we have witnessed a stupendous growth in number of gyms and fitness centres across the world, all housing sophisticated equipment to take care of their clients. They are no longer used by just body builders or professional sportsmen. There is a much greater awareness about the need for staying healthy, so people of all genders and from all age groups and professions are enrolling themselves as members of gyms.

However, some unscrupulous profiteers try to cash in on the gym culture by opening unprofessional centres that have no appropriate equipment, and people can risk their health by visiting such places. Hence it is critical to keep a few key points in mind while choosing the correct gym for yourself.

Your inspiration levels can be notably affected if the gym is situated far off from your office or residence. Thus, selecting a gym that is nearby is very important. The overall environment in the gym, which includes the attitude of the staff, the layout, air-conditioning etc, must also be factored in. Furthermore, the place should be large and comfortable. Only gyms with latest equipment and modern facilities should be selected. This is an important criterion, because machines in poor condition will not only affect the results, but may even be risky for you.

Additional facilities like sauna, massage parlours etc are always a sign of a good gym. To ensure that kids can be looked after during their parents? exercise stints, some gyms also have day care facilities inside their premises.

Look for such gyms that have personal training facilities so that you can make use of exclusive expert advice. Personal training is an excellent way to get yourself a tailored fitness regime and to stay focused. Dedication, focus and easy availability of personal trainers are critical so that you get the best value for your money.

Finally, the expense for the gym must be in accordance with your budget and the services and facilities offered. Adaptable and long term packages offered by some gyms are particularly helpful in increasing affordability, but try not to get into a very long term agreement.

At the end of the day, the thing to remember is that your gym must be a place where you are happy to go everyday and feel energized at the end of every session, and this idea will make your decision easier.

Daily Tips for Business: Industrial-Mechanical

The modern fork truck is the result of many different types of equipment and years of development and research, tracing its roots back over a hundred years to the two-wheel hand truck. Built with wrought iron axels and cast iron wheels, the two-wheel hand truck is a first-class lever and represents one of the earliest applications of the cantilever principle in materials handling equipment.

The Glamorous Writer's Life | grub street daily

By Kate Flora

As a child growing up a small town with the library as my refuge, I thought writers were gods. I imagined that they lived very glamorous lives, an image that was fed by TV and the movies and novels that I read. Writers lived in New York. They went to swank parties and hobnobbed with famous people. They were sent around the country, if not around the world, on book tours. They rode in limos. They were profiled in magazines and interviewed on TV. They dressed, I thought, like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany?s. (And yes, I know SHE wasn?t the writer, but I never imagined myself in a tweed sport coat.) When they had book signings, eager readers lined up around the block to get their signatures.

I dreamed of becoming a writer, but became a lawyer instead. And then one day, when I was taking some time off from work, and at home with two small boys, panicked about not having a job, I thought?well, I?ve always wanted to write. Maybe it?s something I can fit into the small spaces of a mom?s busy life. Nearly ten years later, after a long time spent in the unpublished writer?s corner, my first book was coming out, so I went to New York (glamour, adventure, the BIG TIME) to meet with my publisher to talk about promotion for the book. I wore black pants, white shirt, a vest. I looked very little like Audrey Hepburn.

After a tour of their offices in the Flatiron Building, crowded with manuscripts and crammed with shelves of book, over the moon with excitement, I went to lunch with my editor, my agent, and the publisher. A chicken farmer?s daughter from Maine becoming a writer in Manhattan. The publisher leaned back in his chair, studied me like I was a lab specimen, and asked, ?Why are you here??

?To talk about the publicity campaign for my book,? I said.

After a lecture on how much advertising is necessary to get a book noticed, he delivered the bad news. There was not going to be a publicity campaign for my book. It was a first book. I was unknown. They had invested very little in the book. Then he said, ?What month is this? September? Nine months into the year, and you?re the first first-time author I?ve had lunch with.? I guessed that lunch was my publicity budget.

I was undaunted. I hadn?t really expected glamour. I wasn?t a dreamy kid in Union, Maine anymore. I was just thrilled to be published.

That was back in 1993 or so. And what Anne Lamott writes in her chapter on publication in Bird by Bird is a pretty accurate picture of how it is. There are no bands or parades. It?s more like a roller coaster. You get the prepub review that says you are ?a treadmark on the underpants of life.? Later, you will get the starred review that takes your breath away. On your publication day, no one notices?there are no marching bands, no phone calls from friends, the only flowers you get are the ones you sent yourself.

You schedule an event at Barnes and Noble and they set you up in a ring of chairs occupied by street people who have come inside to get warm and are now snoozing in all the other chairs. Or they seat you at a table where everyone asks you the way to the bathroom, except the bored guy whose wife is shopping, who talks your ear off until his wife is finished, then leaves without buying the book. You speak at the Boston Public Library and a person with mental issues sits in the front row and talks over you until staff escorts her out. Then you go to a library in a small town, and sixty people show up and you sell every book you brought. You visit a bookstore after the New York cab driver has gotten lost three times and told you how he?s inspired by Andrew Carnegie, and no one is there. But the cab driver has given you a character and a story, and then a woman wanders up to you, asks about your book, and buys it, and then confesses it?s the first book she?s ever bought.

When I ask other writers about their glamorous lives, Sheila Connolly says: ?I live in chef?s pants and cracked crocs. Every non-writer I meet assumes I make pots of money. And the absolute low point was driving across the state to a distant town, in the dark, in the rain, and only one person came. And she already owned the book.? Marnie Graff writes, ?Well, we get to work in our jammies. But once we finish all those rewrites, we don?t get to sit back and relish that. Instead, we are setting up readings, traveling to hawk our books, promoting ourselves in blogs and in articles and interviews, if we can get them, when we?d rather be sitting home in our jammies, writing the next one.?

Charlaine Harris, author of the books on which the True Blood series is based, says: ?I thought I would have to drink all the time. I discovered that that?s only optional.? And yet, at our conferences, that?s where we all are. Gathered in the bar. Incredibly congenial. And perhaps looking for a mutual escape from those incessant voices in our heads. An escape from the thousands of hours we spend all alone, in our pajamas, in our rooms, in our chairs, staring at screens as drops of blood slowly form on our foreheads and we face the reality that everything we wrote that day is absolutely crap. So glamorous.

My friend Kathleen Valentine, who?s really taking off on Kindle, says: I?ve only been a ?success? for four months now so I don?t see much different except instead of spending my days glued to the computer designing web sites, I spend my days glued to the computer working on books. However, I can afford to order Chinese food instead of cooking more often?.? Ellen Byerrum writes: ?You have to be cautious when you have a day job. Employers believe you won?t give them your last drop of blood and while some coworkers think it?s cool, others can make your life miserable, particularly if they harbor thwarted writing ambitions. One person I worked with told me not to talk about writing because not everyone had such a glamorous life, which is funny because I gave all my nights and weekends to writing while they had fun. However, I have to say there have been moments of glamour.?

Moments of glamour indeed. Like getting nominated for an Edgar, the mystery world?s equivalent of the Oscars, and needing a gown and shoes. I got my shoes at Out of the Closet, in SF?and the guy behind the counter caressed my lovely peep toe, black satin Bruno Magli pumps with swirls of rhinestones on the toes and said, ?Oh, I wish I would of seen them first.? Like having my editor take me for a drink at the Algonquin, because every writer ought to get to go there. And like being taken to a very fancy restaurant by the late, and wonderful, Leona Nevler at Ballantine. Leona, my agent, the publicist, the publisher, all hanging on my every word. And when I called her later to say ?thank you? and comment on how wonderful it was to finally be treated like I always imagined a writer would be, she said, ?Ah. Yes. But we can turn on you at any time.?

?
