Dateline NBC Busts Kids Cheating on Test

Dateline NBC pulled a fast one Sunday night, but instead of targeting sexual predators, they took down ... a group of middle school kids cheating on a test.

The kids' parents were in on it, too. How did it go down?

In a physical education class, no less. The children were told they had to complete an obstacle course to audition for an "ultimate challenge" TV show.

Unbeknownst to them, Dateline was secretly recording the test, and had planted an actress who encouraged the kids to cheat by inflating their scores.

Their proud parents sat watching in an adjoining room.

The first time through, the kids tried to stop the actress from lying and insisted on posting their real results. The second time, though, they cracked.

Natalie Morales then came out and told the kids they've been set up to see if they cheat. Needless to say, they were mortified when they found out.

Dateline said the report was intended to show how peer pressure affects kids, and maybe so, but it was basically entrapment and public humiliation.

There's got to be a better way to prove a point, right?

Another courageous casualty in Pakistan, journalism's most dangerous country

Murtaza Razvi, an editor at one of Pakistan's leading English newspapers, was murdered in Karachi yesterday. He was one of many journalists I met on a recent trip who have refused to give up their work despite threats.

Two weeks ago I was in an office in Karachi, Pakistan, with a room full of journalists, including Murtaza Razvi, an editor at Dawn newspaper, discussing challenges facing the country?s vibrant media, including risks to covering Pakistan. Yesterday I was e-mailed that he had been murdered.

Before I left for Pakistan a few weeks ago on a journalist exchange program sponsored by the East-West Center, I asked colleagues who reported in the country, both Pakistani and American, about their greatest challenge.

Americans complained of the government's game of ?smoke and mirrors,? a disinformation campaign that puts most other government propaganda efforts to?shame. The challenge for Pakistani journalists, on the other hand, was decidedly more severe. ?We have a completely free media in Pakistan, but no protection,? said one journalist based in Islamabad.

How severe? The country leads the world in journalist murders, the latest just yesterday.

Seven of the other eight Pakistani journalists at a meeting with my group proceeded to share stories of threats. It was common, they said, to receive a threat by a phone call from the Taliban for not getting enough quotes from them, from political parties for including the Taliban in a story or not being represented the way they saw fit, and even from Pakistan?s version of the CIA, the ISI.

But this wasn?t something that had them lining up to find a new job. It was just how things work. Most of the time the person on the other end of the line is bluffing, they said. They had gotten used to the fact that Pakistan was the deadliest country for journalists in 2010 and 2011, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. And killings there have been met with near-perfect impunity throughout the years. For some perspective, consider that there have been 19 unsolved murders of journalists since 2002. (see CPJ?s video)

When you put it that way, having to peer through smoke and mirrors to get to the heart of a story doesn't look so bad.

I visited the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting while I was in Pakistan. The ministry has jurisdiction over the rules and regulations relating to information, broadcasting, and the press. Like many Pakistanis we spoke to on this trip, the minister talked at length about how wonderful it was to have an active, independent, vibrant media that had absolutely no restrictions and how that was contributing to democracy in Pakistan.?

However, when we raised the question of safety and reported threats against journalist, Minister of Information Firdous Ashiq Awan (since replaced), without asking for details or pausing to smooth this over, said: ?Those are complete fabrications. It never happened. It?s not happening.?

We brought up the famous case of Syad Saleem Shazad, a prominent journalist who went missing after exposing Al Qaeda infiltration of the military. He had been ?warned? several times by the ISI for covering sensitive topics, according to his family. He was later found dead. The ISI, was implicated, though it denied involvement.

The minister dismissed the scenario of Shazad's murder as unproven. She did clarify that, "we condemn that sort of action." But she stuck with her statement that there were no threats or real dangers for journalists who were not "over smart." A former local journalist who now works in the ministry agreed with her.

At this point, Issam Ahmed, the Monitor?s Islamabad correspondent, who had been invited to the round table by the minister, shared a story about a time he had been reporting on a sensitive topic in northern Pakistan, when he was summoned into a car by agents to go meet with the ISI bureau chief. The car sped off at breakneck speed to the headquarters, where the chief warned him to ?not report critically.? So, Issam, said, it wasn't a death threat, but intimidation happens.

I never thought I'd seek refuge in Childish Gambino.

OK, let me explain. After years of pursuing the multitalented, infinitely hilarious Donald Glover for a First Date, our stars crossed at long last, and we were able to get to know each other at Tribeca's Ninja restaurant. There, serving up our Japanese food, were men in full ninja regalia, terrifying us at every turn. Whether it was brandishing a dagger as we headed to our table, jumping in front of elevator doors as they opened, throwing down a ninja star on the table before making a dessert or slinging a yellow water balloon (yes, you read right) at us mid-meal, it made for a dining experience that required a companion willing to commiserate in all the scare tactics we came upon.

It was a fitting place to go, considering Glover is at the center of a grass-roots fan campaign to star as Donatello in the live-action remake of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie (no doubt inspired by his own crusade to nab the title role in "The Amazing Spider-Man"). Midway into the meal, he resolved that he'd make a good Donatello, as he tongue-in-cheekily bragged about his prowess in instilling fear in others. But a role as a hero in a half-shell isn't the only aspiration on his horizon.

When asked where he sees himself in five years, he said, "I hope just successful. Still doing stuff I want to do. I always wanted to just do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I never really expected rap to be anything, I don't know if I'll still be rapping, but it'd be nice to still be making music on some level."

We can't wait to see — and hear — how he'll get there.

1. Sponsor or speak at an online event

Being an event sponsor or guest speaker for someone else's online event gets your name out in front of an audience you might not have known before. It broadens your personal brand and can strengthen your influence and relationships with the people that already follow you.

Last fall, I spoke at the IVAA online summit on how Virtual Assistants can set themselves apart on the web. It was a wonderful opportunity to share and it directly resulted in several new clients.

2. Blog to share your story

Nothing strengthens your brand and relationships more than blogging and sharing your stories and experiences ... the good and the bad (as long as you can frame the negatives as learning experiences). The web today is not like the web of 10 years ago. Stuffy and sterile content is out. Being real, approachable and transparent is where it's at.?

3. Create your own product

Your brand will get a huge boost from creating a full product launch regardless of the industry you're in. On the web, that can be a digital ebook or perhaps a membership site where you educate your followers with your expertise. Use social media and email marketing to pre-sell and you'll strengthen your brand prior to product launch.

4. Build credibility

Whether you choose to write a book, guest blog, or maintain a steady stream of focused content on your own website, write about what you know! Getting your name out there with a specific focus will help you build credibility in your field, which will really boost your brand as well as help to raise your value and influence in the marketplace.

5. Be true to who you are?

You were designed for great things! Whether you're just starting out in business or looking for ways to grow an existing one, your brand is a reflection of who you are. Most people can smell a 'fake' a mile away. Being true to your brand will make it more attractive in the long run.?

One of the hardest things small business people need to do is create from a blank slate. If you?ve started your own business, then you?re probably pretty good at it. But, you?re also probably smart enough to know that you don?t need to reinvent the wheel. And when it comes to standard business documents, starting from a template is typically a great shortcut, provided you do enough customization to turn the template into a document that meets your exact business needs.

There are many websites offering templates for everything from business letters to video themes, and the content is of varying quality so it can be hard to know where to go first. A good place to start is the Template Gallery for Google Docs. (Yes, it is Google?s way of getting you to use its Docs suite, but you don?t need to use Docs to use the templates, as after they open in Docs they can be downloaded in a form compatible with your desktop software.)

There are 15 template categories including Business, Presentations, Calculators and Legal. You can filter each by type of document ? spreadsheet, document, presentation, form and drawing. You should also use the language filter to narrow the results for your language (i.e. US English). Within any set of category filters, you can also use a keyword search to get to the exact type of template you need (i.e. cash flow statement). The filtered results can be sorted by star rating, most used, and ?hottest.?

The Template Gallery is a collaborative environment to which anyone with a Google Account can post?so the content is uneven, and may contain sales pitches or links from a company trying to sell you something. However if you can ignore the noise, and know the type of document you?re looking for, you?re likely to find a template that will meet your needs.
