The imams and activists said in a letter to Mayor?Michael Bloomberg?that they?re disturbed at his response to a series of stories by The Associated Press detailing?New York Police Departmentintelligence-gathering programs that monitored Muslim groups, businesses and houses of worship.
Bloomberg has defended the NYPD, saying last week it doesn?t take religion into account in its policing.
Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser acknowledged Wednesday that about a dozen people turned down the breakfast invitation. But he said ?a couple dozen? more said they plan to attend.
The letter to?Bloomberg?contained the names of several dozen Muslim leaders and organizations and said they believe such police measures ?threaten the rights of all Americans, and deepen mistrust between our communities and?law enforcement.?
?Mayor Bloomberg, the extent of these civil rights violations is astonishing, yet instead of calling for accountability and the rule of law, you have thus far defended the NYPD?s misconduct,? the letter said.
The Muslim leaders said they appreciate the mayor?s staunch support a year ago during an uproar over a planned Islamic center near the World Trade Center site. But they said they were disappointed by what he said after the AP stories since August about the police department?s efforts to infiltrate Muslim neighborhoods and mosques with aggressive programs designed by a CIA officer who worked with the department after the Sept. 11 attacks.
The stories disclosed that a team of 16 police officers speaking at least five languages was assigned to use census information and government databases to map ethnic neighborhoods in?New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Documents reviewed by the AP revealed that undercover police officers known as rakers visited local businesses such as Islamic bookstores and cafes, chatting up store owners to determine their ethnicities and gauge their views. They played cricket and eavesdropped in ethnic cafes and clubs.
The AP stories also revealed that one of the CIA?s most experienced clandestine operatives began working inside the police department in July as the special assistant to the deputy commissioner of intelligence.
The CIA is prohibited from spying domestically. Its unusual partnership with the NYPD has troubled top lawmakers and prompted an internal investigation.
Bloomberg in October defended the arrangement, saying it was necessary in a dangerous world.
?There are people trying to kill us,? he said. ?And if the CIA can help us I?m all for getting any information they have and then letting the police department use it as ? if it?s appropriate to protect you and to protect me.?
The letter noted that Muslims comprise at least 10 percent of the city?s population. It said the Muslims leaders were seeking a meeting with the mayor to discuss the issues raised by the reports.
?We believe it is unequivocally wrong and fundamentally misguided to invest law enforcement resources in religious or racial profiling, rather than investigating suspicious activity,? it said. ?We seek your clear, unambiguous, public support for the rights and privacy of all New Yorkers, including Muslims; and a condemnation of all policies that profile and target communities and community groups solely based on their religion or the color of their skin.?
It also said: ?We are deeply disturbed that to date we have only heard your words of strong support for these troubling policies and violations of our rights. We are equally disturbed by (police Commissioner Raymond) Kelly?s denials of what we know to be true as verified by the leaked documents.?
Kelly, meanwhile, met Wednesday evening at a Bronx mosque with two imams who weren?t listed on the letter and with young fans of an NYPD youth soccer league, whose winners were presented with a trophy.

Michigan a step closer to Detroit takeover
DETROIT?? Heading down a path that could lead to the state of Michigan taking over the running of Detroit, Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday appointed a team to review the city's finances.
The team was named after a preliminary review of city finances showed "probable financial stress" after Detroit was unable to tackle its mounting deficits.
The team, which includes State Treasurer Andy Dillon and other local officials, has 60 days to complete its work. The formal review was announced last week.
The appointments are the next step in the review process, which is driven by expectations that Detroit will run out of cash by April.
"Given urgent and time-sensitive financial issues facing Detroit and the need to ensure critical services continue to be provided to city residents, the next step simply necessitates the appointment of a financial review team," Snyder said in a statement.
The formal review could have various results. If a financial emergency is declared to exist, the governor would have to decide on an emergency manager. But if the stress levels are considered mild, the current city management could carry on.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has said he will cooperate with the review process but says his budgets are the remedy to the city's financial crisis.
Last Thursday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., joined religious and civil rights leaders to promise protests and possible civil disobedience against Michigan's new emergency manager law that could lead to a takeover of Detroit government.
"We are prepared to go from education, mobilization, litigation, legislation, demonstration and civil disobedience," Jackson said as he and others held a news conference at Detroit's Bethany Baptist Church.
"We want a positive commitment to restoring democracy and economic justice for all citizens." Jackson said.
Snyder has called for Bing and Detroit's City Council to come up with their own financial rescue plan so Michigan can stay out of the city's business.

But Snyder has also highlighted what he said was the seriousness of the city's money problems, citing Bing's statement that Detroit could run use up its available cash in April.
"We can't let the city run out of money," Snyder said. Besides Detroit's cash-flow problem is a long-term structural deficit that needs a fundamental solution, he said. "Detroit's been in a financial crisis of some kind for decades."
The Detroit Public Schools and the cities of Flint, Pontiac and Benton Harbor already have state-appointed emergency financial managers.
Michigan recently enacted a law expanding the state's power to push aside elected local government and school officials whose agencies get in financial trouble.
Conyers said the expanded law is "seriously flawed" and said it unfairly targets communities with large numbers of minority group members.
Jackson, a Chicago-based activist, said emergency managers are like dictators with the power to override local democracy, discard union contracts and cut vital public services. He said he is seeking U.S. Justice Department intervention.
Detroit, with a population of 714,000, has faced hard times with auto industry contraction and falling revenue. More than 36 percent of its residents are below the poverty line, according to the Census Bureau.
The city was once one of the most populated in the United States. But it lost 25 percent of its residents between 2000 and 2010, the fastest decline for any municipality with more than 100,000 residents besides New Orleans.

Snow and tears mark funeral for North Korean leader (Reuters)
SEOUL (Reuters) ? The world watched anxiously on Wednesday as North Korea staged a huge funeral in the capital, Pyongyang, for former leader Kim Jong-il, searching for signs of what to expect from the isolated nation that may be close to attaining nuclear weapons capacity.
Bleak pictures from state television showed a funeral cortege led by a limousine carrying a huge picture of the 69-year old, who died on December 17, passing serried ranks of olive green-clad soldiers whose bare heads were bowed in homage in the main square of the snow-covered capital.
A hearse carrying the coffin was led by a weeping Kim Jong-un, the son and heir, accompanied by Jang Song-thaek, his uncle and a key power-broker in the transition, and Ri Yong-ho, the army chief of staff.
"Seeing this white snow fall has made me think of the general's efforts and this brings tears to my eyes," Seo Ju-rim, a red-cheeked, weeping female soldier, told North Korean television, referring to Kim.
One of the myths surrounding Kim Jong-il was that he could control the weather and state media has reported unusually cold and wild weather accompanying his death.
Video showed weeping civilians who swayed with grief and shouted "father, father" as black Lincoln and Mercedes limousines and army trucks streamed past the crowds. It was not clear whether the pictures were live or recorded.
"I wished it was a dream, how can this be true," sobbed one middle-aged woman named Kim. "How can anything like this ever happen in the world?"
Kim Jong-un will become the third member of the family to run the unpredictable North Asian country as it enters 2012, the year that was supposed to mark its self-proclaimed transformation into a "strong and prosperous" nation.
Larry Niksch, who has tracked North Korea for the nonpartisan U.S. Congressional Research Service for 43 years, believes it could take as little as one to two years to have a working nuclear missile once the North produced enough highly enriched uranium for the warhead's core fuel.
The prospect of an untested leader, believed to be in his late 20s, having nuclear capacity has alarmed many.
"Yes, we are watching and will be analyzing how any changes can be reflected in our policy," a South Korean government official said. He was not authorized to speak to the media, so could not be identified.
UNCLE JANG, POWER BEHIND THE THRONE
State television showed Jang Song-thaek walking directly behind Kim Jong-un alongside the limousine carrying the coffin. Jang ranks a lowly 19th in the list of names on the state funeral committee but his public elevation confirms that he will play a key role in shaping policies.
An ascetic-looking, bespectacled 65-year-old, Jang has overcome a purge, bitter palace intrigue and personal tragedy to become vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, the supreme leadership council which Kim Jong-il led as head of the military state.
"Kim Jong-un is clearly the head of the new leadership but, in terms of hierarchy and influence, Jang appears to have secured considerable position," said Yoo Ho-yeol, a North Korea expert at Korea University in the south.
Strong it may be -- North Korea is backed by neighboring China, has conducted two nuclear tests and has a 1.2 million-strong armed forces -- but prosperous it is not.
On average, the 25 million North Koreans have a life expectancy three-and-a-half years lower than they did when "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung, the new leader's grandfather, died in 1994, according to U.N. data.
The United Nations, in a country program for 2011-15, says North Korea's main challenge is to "restore the economy to the level attained before 1990" and to alleviate food shortages for a third of its 25 million population.
Indications from the transition since Kim Jong-il's death suggest his "military first" policy will continue, leading to further hardship in a country that endured mass starvation in the 1990s.
Leverage from outside, with the exception of China, is limited. All the United States, South Korea and Japan can do is hope that the regime does not collapse, nor flex its military muscle as it did in 2010, when it shelled a South Korean island.
North Korea was established in 1948 and under its founding father, Kim Il-sung, went to war to try to conquer the South. It failed and in 1953 a dividing line that would become the world's most militarized frontier was drawn across the peninsula.
PROSPECTS OF A PURGE
While Kim Il-sung was revered by his people for fighting Japanese colonial rule, the halo surrounding his successors has steadily dimmed to such an extent that his grandson, the new ruler, will have to rely on people such as his uncle, Jang, to hold on to power, at least in the short term.
Official media in the North have built Kim Jong-un, a jowly and rotund man in his late 20s, into a leader worthy of inheriting the crown, naming him "respected general," "great successor," "outstanding leader" and "supreme commander."
This year, dissident groups based in South Korea, citing North Korean refugees and businessmen working in China, linked the youngest Kim to a crackdown on business activities and a tougher policy on people seeking to flee from North Korea.
Those reports could not be verified independently, but would again suggest that further repression is more likely than an economic opening under the new man.
It also gives little hope for the 200,000 North Koreans who human rights group Amnesty international says are enslaved in labor camps, subjected to torture and hunger or execution.
"There is likely to be a politically motivated purge and imprisonment, and it could go on for a considerable period of time," said Pak Sang-hak, who heads a group in Seoul working to support defectors, and is himself a defector.
"That is especially because of the relative instability of Kim Jong-un's leadership. There might also be persecution as a way of intimidation and discipline."

Jared Bernstein: A Holiday Message
We may be at an interesting inflection point.
- Large majorities have had it with Congressional dysfunctionality.
- Influential Republicans like Mitch McConnell are recognizing the above and view it as a threat to their party.
- Reasonable conservative voices are writing smart pieces that seem to be reaching for hybrid positions on social and economic issues. See here and here, for example.
- The latest debacle -- the fight to extend unemployment insurance and the payroll tax cut -- appears to have demonstrably hurt the Republicans and helped the Democrats (especially the president), and one might expect that ensuing fights will redound similarly, i.e., the public appears to be internalizing the meme that the Democrats are fighting for the middle class while the Republicans are fighting for the rich. Politically, this is a dangerous possibility for Republicans, especially in an election year.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm not suggesting a Kumbaya moment is in the offing. There are still irresistible forces in play here; the Tea Party members of Congress are, I suspect, if anything, even more pissed off and ready to wreck more havoc when they get back. A wounded tiger is a dangerous tiger.
The Republican candidates are also busy fanning these flames.
But these forces of negativity can only breathe if they have the oxygen of public and media support. If they become widely viewed as a small, angry minority selfishly blocking the rest of us from the pragmatic approach to meeting the challenges we all face, they will become increasingly ignored and irrelevant.
Kind of like what Bob Dylan was talking about here.
We thus may look back at this moment as one when the hyper-partisanship undermining our democracy began to crack. Or not. Either way, you can read about it here on my blog.

Bring Out the Kwanzaa Kinara
I don't know where we got a candelabrum. But there we were, lighting the candles in the kinara and reciting Swahili words like umoja, ujima, and kujichagulia while my brother poured water from an earthenware jug onto a half-dead plant. We placed whatever fruit we had (apples, oranges, bruised bananas) onto a table festooned with African objets d'art, the kinara, and a small jug of water. For seven nights, we lit a candle and recited one of the Nguzo Saba principles, like nia for faith. The Swahili didn't roll off our tongues, but we liked how it sounded. We performed a libation, pouring liquid from the kikombe cha umoja, or unity cup, into soil in remembrance of our ancestors.

GAME NOTES: This year's Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl features two storied programs as the California Golden Bears of the Pac 12 and the Texas Longhorns of the Big 12 will square off at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
Jeff Tedford is the winningest coach in Cal football history and led his squad to a 7-5 overall record in 2011. The Golden Bears had big wins over Utah and Arizona State and took Stanford to the wire in a 31-28 battle. California won three of its last to finish 4-5 in the new look Pac 12 Conference.
Tedford is 1-1 in Holiday Bowls with the Golden Bears, who are 10-9-1 all-time in postseason play. California's last bowl game appearance came in the 2009 Poinsetta Bowl, a 37-27 loss to Utah, snapping a four-game bowl win streak for the Golden Bears.
Texas had a good season by most standards, but it was a letdown due to the high expectations Mack Brown has established since taking over in Austin in 1998. Texas is happy to be playing a postseason game after last year snapped an 18-year streak of being invited to the bowl season. During his tenure, the Longhorns set a record with nine straight seasons of 10 wins or more, including winning the 2005 BCS National Championship.
This marks the fifth all-time meeting between these two teams on the gridiron. Texas has won all four previous matchups, with the last one coming way back in 1970.
This will not be the first Holiday Bowl appearance for Brown and Texas, as his team played in the postseason matchup in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2007. Brown is 2-2 in Holiday Bowls. Texas is 25-22-2 in bowl games overall, with its last one being a 37-21 loss to Alabama for the 2010 BCS Championship.
California's late season burst can be attributed to the development of its offensive stars Zach Maynard and Isi Sofele. Tedford commented on Maynard's progression
"He is a first-year player in our program. I really felt like if you look at the last half of the season and took the UCLA game out of it he completed close to 69 percent of his passes with 159 passing efficiency. He played really, really well and didn't turn the football over. I think it was key for him the manage the game and we got our run game going which really helped us finish the year strong".
Maynard threw for 763 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception in his last four games. He did throw three or more interceptions in two games this season, but seems to have grasped the offense better with experience. Maynard's top target this year was his brother Keenan Allen. The sophomore wideout finished the regular season with 1,261 yards and six receiving touchdowns. Allen's 7.4 catches per game ties for 12th in the nation. The duo will have his its work cut out as it faces the Big 12's top passing defense.
Sofele is the key component of Cal's attack. The junior tailback rushed for 1,270 yards and nine touchdowns on 232 carries in the regular season. Sofele is a workhorse as he has carried the ball over 20 times in each of his last four games. California's balanced attack gives it the 37th best offense in the nation with an average of 418.7 total yards of offense per game.
Despite playing in the Pac 12 with the likes of Oregon and Stanford, the Golden Bears are ranked 26th in the nation in total defense (339.4 yards allowed per game). Tedford's defense is very aggressive and ranks 17th in sacks (2.67 per game) and fifth in tackles for loss (7.67 per game). Cal's defense is led by the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Mychal Kendricks, all-conference second-team selection Trevor Guyton, and team captain D.J. Holt.
The Longhorns' offense is decent with averages of 404.0 yards of total offense per game and 28.7 ppg. The offense's key players are all very young, however. Case McCoy, younger brother of Texas alum Colt McCoy, emerged as the team's starting quarterback late in the year. McCoy set career highs in all of the following categories in the regular season finale against Baylor as he completed 24-of-39 pass attempts for 356 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. David Ash could see some time under center as both young quarterbacks continue to develop.
The Longhorn's top rusher Malcolm Brown missed the team's last game. The freshman star gained 707 yards on the ground despite missing three games. Joe Bergeron, also a freshman, reeled off back to back 100-yard performances in the middle of the year, but missed the last two games with injury. Although banged up, Brown and Bergeron have been practicing and are expected to split the carries against the Golden Bears' stifling rush defense.
Mike Davis is the team's top receiving option as he racked up 609 yards on 45 catches so far in his sophomore season. Freshman wideout Jaxon Shipley submitted his second 100-plus yard receiving performance of the year against Baylor with 121 yards on four catches.
The Longhorn defenders experienced a learning curve under first-year defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Cornerback Carrington Byndom spoke about the team's progression during the course of the year
"I think we have come a long way. Definitely in the beginning of spring, it was a little difficult with trying to learn a new system. He put in his time with it during our 13 or 15 practices in the spring, and then in our two-a- days we had to learn and pick up the system. As the season went on, I think everyone started to buy in and started to see the concepts of the defense."
Diaz did a tremendous job as his defense is tops in the Big 12 with 315.3 yards of total offense allowed per game (15th nationally) and ranks first against the run and the pass. The aggressive gameplan has resulted in three players with double-figure stops for losses - end Jackson Jeffcoat (14), linebacker Emmanuel Acho (13.5), and end Alex Okafor (12.5). Acho leads the team with 102 total tackles and was named to the 2011 All-Big 12 First-Team.
While California seemed to click as the season went on, Texas dealt with injuries that took a toll on its late season run. With a few weeks rest, Texas should be fresh. The Longhorns will win this one with exceptional defense and a strong freshmen tandem at tailback.

SC Army veteran, 96, always eager to give blood (AP)
COLUMBIA, S.C. ? At age 96, Joe Johnson is still first in line when the bloodmobile arrives at his South Carolina retirement home. He's always eager to save lives and keep up the habit he started during his Army career.
"I'm sure I've given gallons," says the retired master sergeant. "I don't see any reason to stop."
Johnson, who has lived at the Morningside retirement center in Greenwood, S.C., for about 10 years, is a regular donor, said Katherine Amerson, executive director at the home.
"He's just great. He's always out there, trying to get everyone to donate. `It's your duty,' he tells everybody," Amerson said in a telephone interview.
Johnson said in the same phone call that he began donating after he joined the Army in Tennessee at age 21 and kept it up after moving to Florida, and then later South Carolina. The former infantry soldier said he served in Europe ? though not in combat ? and back in the United States, training National Guard forces.
"They'd say to us, `Line up and give blood' and maybe out of 200 or so in the company, maybe 40 or 50 guys would do it. Some people would just walk away, but I never did," Johnson said. "I constantly gave blood. I had a routine going."
Johnson celebrated his 96th birthday on Tuesday with a cake, which Amerson said he insisted on sharing with some of the other 43 residents at the assisted living home. His most recent blood donation was a week earlier when a mobile unit made one of its periodic visits to the retirement home.
Jason Agee, who works for the not-for-profit The Blood Connection, said he was wondering what Johnson wanted when he first came out to his mobile unit parked outside the retirement home.
"He came straight out to the bus and said, `I'm here to donate, young man!" Agee said.
"He's always telling stories. He's awesome," Agee said. "For him, it's all about giving to help other people. Every pint of blood can save up to three lives, you know."
Agee said his organization collects about 2,000 units, or pints, of blood every week in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina.
Jan Kissimon, the organization's chief marketing officer based in Greenville, said Johnson is one of several older donors in the area and that the organization has taken blood in the past year or so from several people "who've been in the 100-year range."
"We have a small pool of people in that category," said Kissimon. "They are a generation who are used to giving. It's a whole different mentality."
Although one typically must be at least 16 years old to donate blood, there is no upper age limit, said Stephanie Millian, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross in the Washington, D.C., area.
"It seems to be true for those who grew up, or experienced World War II. They become life-long blood donors," Millian said.
The Red Cross is the nation's largest single blood collection agency, and gathers about 6 million units of blood from about 4 million volunteers annually, Millian said.
The average age for donors with the Red Cross is 40, and the organization has taken blood from donors ranging in age from 16 to 102, Millian said.
There are restrictions depending upon medications, travel or residence in certain regions of the world in order to avoid the chance for infectious diseases. Information about donating can be accessed on the Red Cross web site, she said.
The American Association of Blood Banks estimates there are about 10.8 million volunteers who donate blood every year.
The association's website says an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, but less than 10 percent do so annually. About 44,000 blood units are used in hospitals or emergency rooms every day, the website says.
So far, Johnson said he intends to keep on giving for as many years as he can.
"I think I'm good for a few years more," he said with a chuckle.

You're Fired! Donald Trump Bails on GOP Party
Donald Trump is declaring his independence.
After years as a registered Republican, the outspoken real estate mogul has filed paperwork to become an unaffiliated voter in his home state of New York.
Trump made the change official Thursday, a move prompted by his stated interest in mounting a third-party presidential run in 2012.
"Mr. Trump has said for almost a year that if he is not satisfied with who the Republican candidate is, he may elect to run as an independent," spokesman Michael Cohen said Friday. "This change in party affiliation certainly preserves his right to do so, after the finale of 'The Apprentice' in May."
Asked if any developments in the GOP race prompted Trump to make the change, Cohen said no. Trump has said he plans to endorse one of the Republicans running.
According to Politico, which first reported Trump's party switch, he will still be able to vote in the New York presidential primary in April. Trump had once been a registered Democrat.
Cohen also offered that Trump is "very disappointed" with how the Republican Party has handled the payroll tax extension, handing President Obama a political victory.

Newt Gingrich aims to win the GOP nomination with animal photos (The Ticket)

With less than two weeks to go before Iowa's Republican presidential caucus, Newt Gingrich is set to unveil what could be a game-changing secret weapon in his bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.
His campaign announced it will launch a website featuring photos of Gingrich with animals. ABC's Elicia Dover reports:
The campaign said today that it will soon launch a "Pets With Newt" site aimed at Gingrich's love for animals, intended to show a "lighter side" of the candidate. "As speaker I made it possible for people in public housing to keep their pets in 1988. I love pets so we're going to have an entire project," Gingrich said.
Gingrich doesn't have any pets at this time, but he told ABC News today he and his wife Callista want a dog in the White House, and it's a friendly disagreement between the couple over what kind and size of dog. Callista wants a small dog and Newt wants a large dog, though he says dogs like a Great Dane are a little too large.
"When I was a child I had a cocker spaniel and Doberman pincher and German Sheppard. But we have not yet had a family conference on this topic," Gingrich said.
Gingrich has slyly dropped hints at his love of animals throughout his GOP nomination bid. Last summer, he even campaigned at a zoo in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was identified in a local news report as an "expert" on endangered tigers.
In October, Gingrich told CNN that he didn't expect to go into politics, but had actually dreamed about being a zoo director or a paleontologist. And in a November interview with ABC News and Yahoo, Gingrich said the happiest moment of his life was "either looking for dinosaurs with Jack Horner in Montana, or being with my wife Callista on the Serengeti Plain, taking pictures of animals."
Will "Pets With Newt" put Gingrich over the top? Who knows? But it will likely give him a good excuse to mingle with cool animals?which is probably a lot more fun than taunting Mitt Romney all day.

NFL Notebook: Johnson half as good

Talk about lowered expectations.
Just two years removed from a 2,000-yard rushing season, Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is lowering his goals for where he?ll end this season.
With 930 yards through 14 games, Johnson said he?s hoping to gain 1,000 yards.
?Any running back who runs for over 1,000 yards, it puts you up there in a group with elite running backs,? Johnson told the Tennessean. ?Even though I am not having the best of years, to go over 1,000 yards, that?s something a lot of people thought probably wouldn?t happen this year.?
It would seem that given a running back of Johnson?s quality, that gaining 70 yards over his final two games should be money in the bank.
However, in a season that has contained more lows than highs, Johnson has failed to gain 35 yards rushing in six different games this season.
Last week against the Indianapolis Colts, Johnson gained just 55 yards while the previous week against the Saints he was held to 23 yards rushing.
On Saturday, Johnson and the Titans are home to the woeful Jacksonville Jaguars. He will face a much tougher test in the season finale when the Titans are on the road against Houston and their tough defence.
RODGERS WINS TOP ATHLETE AWARD
There is no doubt that Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the leading candidate to earn Most Valuable Player honours for his terrific season leading the Packers.
On Wednesday he received a major boost towards that goal when he was named the Associated Press male athlete of the year for 2011.
Rodgers received 112 votes from the 212 American news organizations that voted for the award. Detroit Tigers Cy Young winning Justin Verlander was a distant second with 50 votes.
Rodgers, who was voted the MVP of last year?s Super Bowl, is the third NFL quarterback to win the award in the past five years, following Drew Brees in 2010 and Tom Brady in 2007.
?Those guys are household names, the best of the best,? Rodgers said. ?It?s special to win the award, and something I?ll remember.?
Through the Packers? opening 14 games this season, where Rodgers has led them to a 13-1 record, he has completed 68.1% of his passes for 4,360 yards with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
No doubt it will be the first of many awards that will go to Rodgers this season, especially if the Packers win their second consecutive Super Bowl.
MCCOY?S BELL STILL RINGING
For the second consecutive game, Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy will not be playing as he is still suffering from post-concussion syndrome and is unable to practise.
McCoy has been sidelined since taking a hit to the helmet from linebacker James Harrison on Dec. 8, in Pittsburgh. Harrison?s hit led to a one-game suspension.
McCoy was at the Browns? training facility Wednesday but has not yet been medically cleared to return which leaves veteran backup Seneca Wallace to make the start Saturday in Baltimore.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur has not officially chosen Wallace as his starter.
?Not yet, but it?s going to come soon, I?m sure,? he told the Plain Dealer.
The Browns? failure to check McCoy for a concussion after he was hit has led to a lot of criticism and has led the NFL to institute putting a certified trainer in the press box to help monitor head injuries.
Shurmur said he doesn?t know if McCoy would be cleared to play in the season finale against Pittsburgh on Jan. 1.
TEBOW-MANIA REVVING UP
Tim Tebow could be headed to the Pro Bowl.
With the fan voting portion coming to an end, Tebow finished third among all AFC quarterbacks and fifth in voting of all quarterbacks.
The leading vote-getter among AFC quarterbacks was Tom Brady with 1.45 million. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger finished second with 935,000 followed by Tebow who received 633,000 votes.
Tebow-mania could rev up another notch this weekend if the Denver Broncos down the Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders lose to Kansas City, a scenario that would give the Broncos the AFC West division and send Tebow into the playoffs.
Fan voting, though is just part of the process.
NFL players and coaches vote on Pro Bowl rosters Wednesday and Thursday, and the rosters are chosen through a process that gives equal weight to the players? votes, the coaches? votes and the fans? votes.
Pro Bowl rosters will be announced next Tuesday with the game taking place on the Sunday before the Super Bowl, Jan. 29 in Honolulu.
Naturally, players on the Super Bowl teams will not participate in the Pro Bowl. A large number of other players aren?t available due to injuries.

Snow, wind, rain cause holiday travel worries (Reuters)
DENVER (Reuters) ? Snowfall in the Rockies, strong winds in the West and soaking rain in the South caused problems for holiday travelers on the first official day of winter, forecasters said on Thursday.
A snowstorm swept across Colorado overnight, dumping up to 10 inches of snow in the Denver metropolitan area and up to two feet of snow in the foothills west of the city, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm snarled rush-hour traffic in the Denver area, and roads from Wyoming to the New Mexico border remain snow-packed and icy, said Mindy Crane, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.
"It's affected the whole urban corridor," Crane said.
More than 100 regional commuter flights from rural airports had been canceled at Denver International Airport, but all runways were open, said airport spokeswoman Laura Coale.
The early winter snowfall is a boon to Colorado's ski resorts for the upcoming busy holiday season. The fresh snow and warmer temperatures forecast for the weekend will make for optimum skiing conditions, said Mistalynn Lee, spokeswoman for the Winter Park ski resort west of Denver.
"Christmas came early," she said.
The dangers of heavy snowfall to travelers in some parts of the country were highlighted by the rescue of a college student stranded in her car for nine days on a barren northern Arizona road was rescued after living on candy bars and melted snow.
Arizona State University student Lauren Weinberg, 23, was found Wednesday by two U.S. Forest Service employees patrolling on snowmobiles, Coconino County Sheriff's Office patrol Lieutenant Jim Coffey said.
The discovery came the same day a Texas family was rescued from their sports utility vehicle, trapped for at least 36 hours under heavy snow in New Mexico, police said.
Heavy snowfalls were again developing over New Mexico, with 12 to 18 inches of snow expected on Thursday afternoon and evening in the mountains, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Wiley.
Some three to five inches of snow are expected in the western part of the state, he said.
Wiley said travel could be hampered, though the winds were not likely to be as strong as the 35-40 mph winds that blew snow around earlier this week, shutting down highways in New Mexico and nearby states.
Wind gusts also affected Southern California on Thursday, where forecasters warned travelers they should use extra caution as gusts up to 60 mph would make driving difficult over the holiday weekend. The Weather Service advised motorists to watch for broken tree limbs and downed power lines.
By Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, Wiley said, the snow storm is expected to move into north Texas, where two to four inches of snow could fall.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee also could disrupt flights, said AccuWeather.com senior meteorologist Paul Walker.
Persistent rain was falling in Memphis early on Thursday and moving across the state.
"There will be a lot of rainfall today, with the areas south and east of us getting one to three inches," said Trevor Boucher, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Nashville.
Most of the more violent weather -- thunder and lightning storms -- will stay south of Tennessee, he said.
The showers will move into the Northeast, bringing heavy rains and thick fog overnight to New York, Washington and Philadelphia, Walker said.
"There's going to be some snow up into northern New England, north of Boston," Walker said.

Walgreen profit down, says no Express Scripts deal (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Walgreen Co (WAG.N) posted a lower quarterly profit as the largest U.S. drugstore chain's margins were hurt by lower reimbursement rates for the prescriptions it fills, fewer flu shots and its spat with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Inc (ESRX.O).
Its shares were down 7.1 percent in premarket trading on Wednesday.
Walgreen, which has more than 7,800 U.S. drugstores, reiterated that is does not plan to renew its contract with Express Scripts, which is set to expire on December 31, but Chief Executive Greg Wasson said the chain remains "open to any fair and competitive offer" from the PBM.
If the contract does expire as planned, patients who fill Express Scripts prescriptions at Walgreens stores will have to go elsewhere, cutting into Walgreen's sales.
Walgreen estimated that it will have 97 percent to 99 percent of last year's prescription volume in fiscal 2012, assuming it does not resolve its impasse with Express Scripts.
But seeking to downplay the potential impact of the dispute on its business, Walgreen said that more than 100 health plans, employers and various Express Scripts clients told it they have either had changed PBMs or made sure patients would still have access to Walgreens pharmacies in 2012.
Walgreen said the decision to part ways with Express Scripts cost it a penny per share in comparable pharmacy sales in the first quarter, and 1 cent per share in expenses.
Walgreen earned $554 million, or 63 cents per share, in the fiscal first quarter that ended on November 30, compared with a profit of $580 million, or 62 cents per share, a year earlier.
As of November 30, Walgreen had given 5 million flu shots this season, down from 5.6 million last year at the same point.
Sales rose 4.7 percent to $18.16 billion, the company said in early December. Sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, rose 2.5 percent. Prescription sales, which make up nearly two-thirds of business, rose 2.6 percent at drugstores open at least a year.
Its shares fell $2.38 to $31.12 in premarket trading.

Zynga's rivals welcome the social gaming IPO | VentureBeat
With the IPOs of Zynga and Nexon, the social and online game industries have their first billion-dollar public offerings. May many more follow.
That?s the spirit among other social gaming rivals, including those that have been fierce competitors to Zynga, the largest of the social gaming companies. Now both Zynga and Nexon will have an extra billion dollars to buy some of those rivals, spreading around some of the holiday cheer. And the worldwide publicity from the offerings will bring new recognition that gaming is a big business and that social and online games have mass market awareness.
As we chronicled in our 25,000-word history of the company, Zynga has come a long way since chief executive Mark Pincus (pictured) founded the company in 2007. His tale is sure to inspire other entrepreneurs to follow in his footsteps. Pincus will ring the opening bell ? virtually, from Zynga?s headquarters in San Francisco ? on Nasdaq this morning.
Nexon went public three days ago, raising $1.2 billion on the Tokyo Stock Exchange at a $7 billion valuation. Zynga priced its IPO shares yesterday at $10 a share, which will enable it to raise $1.15 billion at a $8.9 billion valuation.
?Zynga?s IPO is great for the industry, providing a focal point for many to learn and get more involved in important industry trends,? said Trip Hawkins, chief executive of mobile and social gaming firm Digital Chocolate. ?The IPO should also prove to be a catalyst for many future transactions that will help the industry.?
Hawkins is certainly no fan of Zynga, as he competes head to head against it every day. Peter Relan, chairman of YouWeb and CEO of social game firm CrowdStar, said, ?In the western world zynga is the first company to bring validity to a business model that has thrived in Asia for over a decade as exemplified by the Nexon IPO.?
Kevin Chou, chief executive of hardcore social gaming company Kabam, said, ??The excitement and pricing of Zynga?s IPO as one of the largest in gaming history shows just how powerful and fast disruption is coming to the industry.?
He added, ?Zynga is at the center of not one but three very powerful disruptive forces.? That includes the free-to-play business model (where users play for free and pay real money for virtual goods) as a frictionless way to optimize how to charge for entertainment. It also provides technology advancements to put entertainment within reach of any consumer with an internet connected device. And it enables ?social interactions that power connectivity and play.?
Chou said, ?It?s the most important event in the gaming industry in the last decade, and Zynga didn?t even exist five years ago.?
Arjun Sethi, head of social game maker Lolapps at 6waves Lolapps, said, ?Zynga?s IPO is an important validation for the social gaming market which will continue its rapid growth in 2012. Zynga?s milestone proves that companies taking a data-informed approach to their product development continue to find the most success.?
Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, isn?t allowed to comment on the valuation yet. But he said, ?It?s not a surprise that they priced at the high end of the range. I think they created a lot of demand with limited supply, and expect it to trade up due to demand.?
Alex St. John, former president of social network Hi5, said, ?I think it?s a good thing no matter what happens. If they fail it will be blamed on the bad times and Facebook dependency. If they succeed, they will define the value of hundreds of online game companies that are successful and control their own audiences.? The market will become highly educated about the online game business regardless of what happens.?
?What Zynga?s IPO does is finally put tangible metrics and evaluations within the social space,? said Jesse Divnich, analyst at game research firm EEDAR. ?Till now the forces driving evaluations have mostly been expert driven guest work.? Now we?ll have an entire public market driving evaluations to their true value.?
But Divnich said that these new IPOs shouldn?t necessarily lead to a bunch of others.
?I do fear that Zynga?s IPO may create a surge in IPO offerings from other social and mobile game companies across the world, much like we saw in the 2000?s with the internet boom,? he said. ?At the very least, having an objective measuring stick (Zynga?s IPO) will likely accelerate acquisitions in the space. Certainly those being acquired or going public will see the benefit, but I do worry that this could be part of a bubble.?
Eric Goldberg, managing director at Crossover Technologies, said that Zynga?s IPO may actually be an impediment to more social game companies going public. Other companies will want to ride in Zynga?s slipstream and insist that they do one or two things better than Zynga. It doesn?t always follow that these followers are going to be good investments, Goldberg said.

Race to the Top Education Dollars Not Awarded to Oklahoma (ContributorNetwork)
In a competition among 35 states and Puerto Rico for millions of dollars in grant money from the federal government for education, Oklahoma has lost out -- for the third time. Oklahoma's governor, Mary Fallin, told NewsOK.com that "Oklahoma delivered a strong application" for the federal grant and "It is disappointing the Obama administration has chosen not to name us as a Race to the Top grant winner."
Race to the Top Federal Education Grant
The Race to the Top federal education grant is part of the Obama administration's focus on improving educational systems throughout the United States. The president has made it clear that improvements in education are an investment in the future of the nation.
The early childhood grants are intended to improve children's readiness for kindergarten. Each state that applied for grant money provided plans for implementation of programs that would increase access to high-quality education programs for low-income children from birth to five years of age.
The nine states, Delaware, California, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Washington and North Carolina will receive portions of the early childhood grant money totaling $500 million.
Seven other states are in the running in the Race to the Top program, but these funds are available to be allocated in K-12 education. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Kentucky, Arizona, Louisiana and Colorado are vying for the $200 million available in grant funds; the awards will be announced before the first of the new year.
Oklahoma Early Childhood Education
The National Institute for Early Education Research examines early childhood education on a state-by-state basis and nationally. Oklahoma ranked first in the nation for each year 2008 to 2010 for education access for 4-year-olds in all areas, including low-income families with 71 percent of eligible children enrolled in some form of education.
In the early learning quality standards checklist, Oklahoma meets or exceeds standards in 9 out of 10 standards, with the one unmet standard being degree status of assistant teachers.
The state currently spends $4,477.00 per student with the total spent per student, including local and federal funds is $7,855.00 per student.
Fallin pledged that despite not receiving the Race to the Top funding, Oklahoma will remain committed to providing excellent early childhood education.

Bears' Hurd facing drug charges
CHICAGO (AP) ? Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was in federal custody Thursday after authorities accused him of trying to set up a drug distribution network in the Chicago area and arrested him after he allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent.
According to the federal complaint, Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. The complaint contends Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.
Hurd told the agent "his co-conspirator is in charge of doing the majority of the deals" while he focused on "higher-end deals," the complaint said. He allegedly said he could pay for the kilogram of cocaine after "he gets out of practice," then walked out of the restaurant with the package and was arrested.
The complaint alleges that Hurd also told the agent that he and a co-conspirator already distribute about four kilos of cocaine a week in the Chicago area, but his supplier couldn't keep up with his demands.
He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance later Thursday. It wasn't immediately known whether he had an attorney and his agent, Ian Greengross, did not immediately return a message.
The Bears said the team is aware of Hurd's arrest and is gathering details about what happened.
"We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information," the team said in a statement.
Hurd, a 26-year-old native of San Antonio who played college ball at Northern Illinois, played for five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and is now in his first season with the Bears. Newt Gingrich will really, really not attack his Republican primary opponents. Except when he does.
The former House speaker won applause from voters throughout the summer and fall for aiming his fire at President Barack Obama rather than other GOP presidential candidates. In a letter to supporters Tuesday, Gingrich said it was ?critical? for Republicans to have a nominee who has not been roughed up in a primary, writing: ?I have refrained from launching attacks on my Republican opponents, though I have reserved the right to respond when my record has been distorted.?

A Dec. 1 Polk County GOP dinner in Iowa offered a typical example. Gingrich renewed his vow to stay positive in the race, telling reporters: ?I?m not interested in distinguishing myself from Mitt Romney.?
?I?m happy to be who I am,? he said, before adding the cutting dig: ?I think that distinguishes me from Mitt Romney.?
Veteran Gingrich watchers see a familiar dynamic from his bomb-hurling days as a House backbencher; Gingrich casts himself as a historian interested in Platonic dialogue with his adversaries, a statesman who is above mere political tactics ? then seizes tactical opportunities to tear into his most credible opponent with glee.
Former New York Rep. Susan Molinari, a Romney supporter who served alongside Gingrich in the House, said Gingrich?s rhetorical games were entirely familiar from a politician long known as a savage partisan competitor.
?This is Newt thinking he?s smarter than everybody else, which is always when life catches up with Newt,? Molinari said of Gingrich?s two-track messaging. ?I honestly think he thinks if he says, ?I?m not gonna take any hits on Romney,? and goes ahead and does it, the majority of people will believe he is not hitting Romney ? I guess maybe he?s betting that the discrepancy between what he says and what he does won?t catch him until after Jan. 3 or 10.?
For some voters, Gingrich?s ?do as I say, not as I do? approach may be particularly dizzying, as he was noted mostly, if at all, during the early primary debates for being a voice of reason and substance, decrying media inanity and partisan antics.
But as his poll numbers began to rise, so did Gingrich?s zest for hand-to-hand political combat. As early as late November, Gingrich drew an acid, if largely implicit, contrast with Romney, saying that he is ?a lot more conservative than Mitt Romney? and vowing: ?I wouldn?t lie to the American people.?
?I wouldn?t switch my position for political reasons. It?s perfectly reasonable to change positions if you see new things you didn?t see,? Gingrich said. ?If you go around and adopt radically different positions based on need for any one election, people will ask, ?What will you tell me next time???
Gingrich was entirely happy to mix it up with Romney on the debate stage in Iowa Saturday, saying that his opponent had a career in the private sector only ?because you lost to Teddy Kennedy in 1994.?
